Although born in Kimberley, Hazel Buchan’s family relocated to Johannesburg where she spent her schooling years. She was accepted at the National School of Arts where she completed matric. Hazel was awarded Top Student when she graduated from the Johannesburg College of Art three years later. She commenced working life in an advertising agency as a junior visualiser/ typographer. Stints at two design studios followed where she continued to hone her craft as a designer. During a spell at an event company she met renowned paper sculptor Peter Holliday who sparked her enduring passion for paper. He mentored her for several years through many projects and commissions they completed. Hazel is internationally recognised for her innovative paper sculptures across a multiplicity of media from launches to print media, exhibitions, paper portraits and interior design..

She loves to experiment and explore ways of bringing together all the things she enjoys; typography, paper, illustration and highly detailed three dimensional objects. Hazel continues to create unique synergies in her exquisitely detailed paper designs for clients all around the world.

Today she freelances. Her work is on display at several corporate head offices such as Sappi, Sasol and Nestle, inside Advertising Agencies, paper companies and the Sibaya Casino and within various private collections. Her talented diversity across illustration, typography and design is evident throughout this website.
